Earthy Eclectic Apartment Project Reveal!

This home is a private residence designed for a family of four in Bangalore. The apartment is spread over 2800 square feet and features an earthy, eclectic material palette and selection across. Located on the South side of the city on the 21st floor, the rooms are filled with natural light with cityscape views.

When we first met the clients they expressed their love for natural materials and that’s exactly what we focused on bringing into the space. We have extensively used teak wood & teak veneer, exposed brick, rattan, and linen fabrics throughout the home. With this very apartment we have tried to push the design envelope and by doing so we feel each space is unique, creative, one that is filled with interest, pattern and texture.

The Entryway:

Before:

You walk into a typical builder-grade home from the flooring to the paint on the walls. Our clients really wanted an upgrade, one that went down a natural finish route of using materials like Athangudi and Kota stone for the floor but we sadly couldn’t as we weren’t allowed to break the existing floor tile. The building management had given us strict restrictions to adhere to. Thankfully, we brought about the same look with the variety of vitrified tiles available in the market!

As you enter the house you are welcomed by an interplay of colour. We used athangudi patterned vitrified tile on the floor and a wedgwood blue pottery shade on the walls. Rich teak pieces with wicker, and a circular teak mirror make up this narrow space.

Foyer

The peonies artwork was painted by our client and that’s what inspired us to paint the walls in a pastel blue shade, tying in their love for England & London!

Living Room

A rustic vibe flows through the living areas of the home. The wooden beams are a feature in this space and is continued from the ceiling onto the walls. The arched storage unit is another feature or stand-out piece here, the TV wall was designed keeping this piece in mind from the very beginning. A neutral sofa is paired with a tropical print seating and a wicker twin seater in grey. The art work really picks up on the hues of the room and every piece in the room is highlighted with a beautifully planned out lighting scheme.

The Balcony:

Updated wood tile floors and repurposed wood from our clients old bed makes for the wall decor in our earthy eclectic balcony. We reused the beds drawer fronts, painted it in a powder blue finish- added knobs to look like a window/shutter and fixed it on the wall! The remaining wood we used as simple shelves on the opposite wall.

The Dining Room:

Since the dining is a long space we sectioned the room by smart furniture placement according to function around the table. A custom vintage-feel crockery unit with botanical prints on one side and a built in bar on the other end.

We also designed a corner by the entryway with a teak and wicker chair and a metal and wood cabinetry with a glass facade to house their books, art pieces and souvenirs from their travels.

The dining table is a soft edged finished acacia table from Rajasthan and the chairs are made from reclaimed teak and wicker with a plaid linen fabric. The athangudi tiles add character under the table and above we hung two etched glass and brass chandeliers on the teak finished wood beam.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home for our clients since they love to cook and is equipped with everything they need! Before there was no separation between the kitchen and utility, a black french door partition now separates both the spaces. Wood and white make for a classic combination and forms the palette of this kitchen! Touches like the rose gold sink and tap, brass hardware and glass sconces and pendant light by the kitchen window complete the room.

Kitchen

Since the home is surrounded in wicker, we added the cane detailing to the lift up shutter above the chimney. Finally we went with contrasting blue and white tiles that really stands out in this warm kitchen. We also managed to fit in a breakfast nook at the entryway with floating shelves.

Now enjoy the photo tour for the beautiful master bedroom. A custom king size teak bed and teak veneer and rattan side tables are accentuated with a brick wall and glass and brass pendant lighting. I love the bed with details like the fabric bench headboard with leather ties. The gorgeous hand knotted rug is plush and adds to the richness of the room.

Both the bedside tables aren’t symmetrical, her side features a carved wood mirror in gold and also functions as a dresser. Across the bed we also managed to fit in a cosy seating corner and an intricately carved wood chest of drawer. The flooring here is a warm teak oak laminate floor from Pergo floors. The couple’s wardrobe runs along one wall and is wrapped in teak veneer with a lovely linen sandwich detail on the shutters. At the end of the passage we have installed a acid washed metal grid mirror, the placement of the mirror visually elongates the room. Lastly, light up the candles and the turn on the soft lighting in this room, and the space emanates radiance.

Master Bathroom

Before:

The bathroom of this bedroom went through a minimal builder grade upgrade. Sharing a few easy builder grade tips (what we did in this master bath)-

  • Added in a new luxurious shower, a new basin from Toto, Kohler’s new brushed nickel range, vanity finished in teak with ample storage, new light fixtures, a large antique finished framed mirror (here’s an example of what a little trim detail can do), and finally- a gorgeous patterned highlight tile for the shower.

On the false ceiling we have used fibre optic lights, you feel like your sleeping under the stars at night in style and comfort. The starry night concept was requested by the kids as they always wanted it in their rooms, and we gave them just that!

The flooring here is also from Pergo floors in a grey farmhouse oak tone and is continued into the rest of the private rooms.

This bedroom was designed for our clients six year old daughter, and is the most feminine room in the house. She loves blue and she picked the indigo blue floral wallpaper for her room. The custom poster bed is a pretty subtle powder blue, by layering beautiful linens in white and grey, with touches of pink completes this room for a little girl.

By using white for the wardrobes the room feels soothing, calm and bright. An eclectic collection of knobs and handles were chosen for the shutters, one shutter is finished in wicker. We have also hung up a jute pin board on the wall, and added in a nightstand in a light wood finish and a foldable study on the other side of the bed. Both the kids bedrooms aren’t designed to be conventional kids room, indeed is a space that they can grow along with!

Boy Bedroom

The request was a lot of black, grey with wood finishes. This bedroom is cool for a boy, with a classic striped painted wall, a black bed with striped detailing running into his bed linen. The study features an oversized black light, bringing in the right dark element and happens to be our favourite light fixture! The stripe detailing in wood and grey is also continued into his long, functional study. His love for football and Harry Potter comes through with a few decor pieces placed around the room.

His wardrobe sits on the far end as you see from the study (picture below), that is the passageway leading into the bedroom and was a tight space to capture. A geometric rug picks on the overall vibe of the room. This room is designed around stripes, and we absolutely love how we feel about stripes by looking at this minimalist, monochromatic bedroom.

Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom is a multifunctional room for the family. The client’s old day bed also doubles as a bed when they have guests over. We added in a grey chair to lounge in, a foldable study doubling as a study/workspace as work from home has become more prevalent these days. There is also more space in the middle for the kids to craft and for the family to exercise.

I hope you enjoyed this walk through of each space in this lovely home. This project is truly eclectic for a reason, you won’t know what you will find on the other side of the door. Until the next one, adios!
